Ron Holthaus

Ron Holthaus, age 68, of Decorah, Iowa, died on Wednesday, April 3, 2013, at his home.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:30 a.m., Monday, April 8, 2013, at St. Benedict Catholic Church, 307 West Main Street, Decorah, IA, with Rev. Gary Krapfl and Rev. Phillip Gibbs presiding. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 2:00-5:00 p.m., on Sunday, April 7, 2013, at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, 604 South Avenue in Decorah. The family will greet friends and family following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St. Benedict's School, 402 Rural Avenue, Decorah, IA, 52101 or to the Hope Cancer Lodge, 750 Hawkins Drive, Iowa City, IA, 54246.

Ron was born on June 4, 1944 in Decorah, IA, the son of Raymond and Hilda (Bohr) Holthaus. He attended DeSales Catholic School in Ossian, IA, graduating in 1963. Ron served in the Army from 1966-1968, stationed in Vietnam from 1967-1968. Ron married Lorraine Croatt on February 3, 1973, at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in St. Lucas, Iowa. They recently celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary. Ron and his brother, Willard Holthaus, owned and operated Jennerjohn-Holthaus Drilling from 1976 until 2005 when they sold the business. Ron continued on as shop foreman, until January 2013. Ron was a devoted husband, father and ‘Poppa’ who treasured his family above all else. He enjoyed playing cards, shooting pool, a good round of golf and every minute of each annual family vacation.

Ron was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and the Helof Holm VFW Chapter #1977.

Ron is survived by his wife, Lorraine of Decorah; his daughter, Julie (Nick)Rogers of Red Wing, MN, his son, Chad (Emily) Holthaus of Baltimore, MD, his daughter, Shanna (Rob) Nunn of Eden Prairie, MN, and his daughter, Renae (Ryan) Dahl of Cresco, IA; three grandchildren, Alex Rogers, Tyler Rogers, and Jack Holthaus; three brothers, Adrian (Sue), Willard (Mary Ellen), and Dave Holthaus, all of Decorah, IA; four sisters, Inez (Dan) Schmitt, West Union, IA, Judy (Norb) Bullerman, Calmar, IA, Connie (Tim Furry) Sande, La Crosse, WI, and Max (Karl) Klotzbach, Decorah, IA; his mother-in-law, Verena Croatt, West Union, IA; five sisters-in-law, Elaine Holthaus, Dubuque, IA, Phyllis (Mark)Gully, Cape Coral, FL; Janice (Gary) Mihm, West Union, IA; Karen Born,Rochester, MN; Susan Croatt, Maquoketa, IA; two brothers-in-law, Melvin (Woody) Croatt, St. Paul, MN, and Roger (Tracy) Croatt, St. Lucas, IA; and many special nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ken Holthaus; sisters, Jane Blair and Pat Seiler; father-in-law, James Croatt; brothers-in-law, Ken Croatt and Mike Born.

Ron's family would like to extend special thanks to those who have been there throughout the years. First, thank you to Dr. William Iverson of the VA Clinic in Iowa City, the staff of the Winneshiek County Hospice, and the staff of Hope Cancer Lodge in Iowa City, for such excellent care and compassion.

Thank you to all family and friends for their love, companionship, and so many joy-filled memories. Words cannot express our love and gratitude for this amazing husband, father and grandfather. We treasure the time we had with him and will hold him in our hearts forever.
